Grand Theft Auto V came out in 2013, and thirteen years later it’s still showing up near the top of Steam’s most-played games list — a run matched by almost nothing else in the industry. The single-player story is long finished, but GTA Online has turned the game into a live service that’s arguably outlasted the game it was built on top of.
GTA Online Is the Real Reason It’s Still Alive
Rockstar has kept adding heists, business mechanics, and story-driven updates to GTA Online for over a decade, turning what started as a multiplayer mode into the actual reason most current players own the game. With Grand Theft Auto VI’s release looming, a lot of that ongoing player base is treating Los Santos as a placeholder — and Rockstar clearly knows it, which is part of why Online content hasn’t slowed down.
The Enhanced Edition Changed the Equation
The current-generation Enhanced version of GTA V, with upgraded lighting, textures, and load times, gave the game a genuine reason for existing players to come back and for new players to get in without the visual compromises of the original 2013 release. It’s a big part of why the Steam numbers have stayed as high as they have this deep into the game’s life.
Worth Playing While Waiting for GTA6?
If you haven’t touched GTA V, or haven’t been back in years, it remains one of the most complete open-world packages on PC — a full single-player campaign plus a still-active online mode with more content than most standalone live-service games ship in their entire lifespan.
