The Builder Base is a second, separate village in Clash of Clans that runs alongside your main home village, with its own Town Hall equivalent, its own troops, its own defenses, and its own progression track. Unlocked once a player’s home village Town Hall reaches a required level and the O.T.T.O Outpost is built, the Builder Base was designed to give players a shorter, faster-paced combat loop that doesn’t require the long build times and large army camps of the main game. Since its original launch, the Builder Base has been substantially reworked through the Builder Base 2.0 update, which changed how battles are structured and added new progression at the top end. This guide explains what the Builder Base is, how progression works, and exactly how it differs from the home village you’re used to managing. If you haven’t read through the fundamentals of the main village yet, check out our complete Clash of Clans guide for that foundation first.
What the Builder Base Actually Is
The Builder Base is a distinct village map, separate from your home village, accessible from its own tab in the game once unlocked. Instead of a Town Hall, progression in the Builder Base is governed by the Builder Hall, which determines what defenses, traps, troops, and buildings you can construct or upgrade, in the same way the Town Hall governs the main village. The Builder Base also introduces its own resources, Builder Base Gold and Builder Base Elixir, which are entirely separate currencies from the Gold and Elixir used in your home village, meaning progress and spending in one village has no direct effect on the other beyond the shared pool of Builders used to construct and upgrade buildings.
How You Unlock and Access the Builder Base
Access to the Builder Base requires building the O.T.T.O Outpost in your home village, which becomes available once your Town Hall reaches the required level. Constructing the Outpost opens the Builder Base tab and starts you off with a basic Builder Hall and a small set of starting buildings and defenses. From that point, the Builder Base develops on its own track, and while home village progress isn’t required to keep playing the Builder Base once unlocked, most players naturally split their attention and Builder usage between both villages depending on which offers more immediate progress.
Builder Hall Progression and the Multi-Stage Attack System
Builder Hall progression unlocks new defenses, troops, and buildings much like Town Hall progression does in the home village, and the Builder Base has been expanded over time, including the addition of Builder Hall level 10 as part of the Builder Base 2.0 update, which introduced new defenses and troops such as the X-Bow and the Electrofire Wizard. One of the most significant changes introduced with Builder Base 2.0 is the multi-stage attack system. At lower Builder Hall levels, battles play out similarly to the original single-stage format, but from Builder Hall level 6 onward, attacks unfold across two distinct stages rather than a single continuous battle, meaningfully changing how both attacking and base-building strategy work at higher Builder Hall levels.
The Star System Is Different From the Home Village
Unlike the home village, where every attack uses the same one-to-three star scale regardless of context, the Builder Base 2.0 update introduced two distinct star types tied to the multi-stage battle system: Bronze Stars, earned by successfully clearing the first stage of an attack, and Silver Stars, earned by clearing the second stage. This layered star system means Builder Base attacks reward partial success differently than home village attacks do, and base design on the Builder Base side has to account for defending across two separate stages rather than a single continuous layout.
Versus Battles, Not Clan Wars
Combat in the Builder Base happens through Versus Battles, a matchmaking system that pairs you against another player’s Builder Base for a timed one-on-one attack, rather than the clan-based war system used in the home village. There is no equivalent to Clan Wars or Clan War Leagues within the Builder Base, and Versus Battles don’t involve coordinating with clanmates or targeting specific bases within a group, they’re a straightforward matchmaking loop built around quick individual attacks rather than sustained clan cooperation.
Troops, Heroes, and Building Differences
The Builder Base has its own separate troop roster, distinct from home village troops, along with its own set of defenses and traps that don’t share upgrade paths, costs, or unlock requirements with the main village. Heroes in the Builder Base are also separate from home village heroes, following their own leveling requirements tied to Builder Hall progress rather than Town Hall progress. Because the two villages don’t share troops, spells, or heroes, strategies that work well in the home village, such as a specific troop composition or spell combination, don’t necessarily translate to the Builder Base, and players generally need to learn Builder Base attacking and defending as a largely separate skill set.
B.O.B. and the Shared Benefit to Your Home Village
While most Builder Base progress stays contained to that village, one major exception was introduced with Builder Base 2.0: B.O.B., a robotic construction assistant unlocked at Builder Hall level 9 after completing a set of tasks. Unlocking B.O.B. grants a permanent sixth Builder usable in the home village, making the Builder Base one of the few parts of the game where dedicated progress directly benefits your main village’s construction speed. This gives players a concrete, practical reason to invest time in the Builder Base beyond its own standalone progression and Versus Battle rewards, tying the two villages together in a way that wasn’t originally the case when the Builder Base first launched.
