Deadlock: Why Valve’s Unreleased MOBA Is Already a Hit

Deadlock has no release date, no marketing, and is still invite-only — yet it's pulling concurrent player counts that rival Overwatch. Here's what Valve's mystery project actually is.

Deadlock shouldn’t be this popular. Valve hasn’t given it an official release date, hasn’t run a single marketing campaign, and access is still gated behind invites and Steam Family Sharing tricks. And yet, its concurrent player numbers have been climbing steadily through 2026, at times sitting close to established live-service giants like Overwatch — entirely on word of mouth.

What Is Deadlock, Exactly?

Deadlock is a third-person hero shooter that borrows its core structure from MOBAs: two teams of players push lanes, farm resources from AI creeps, and level up hero-specific abilities across a match. Layered on top is fast, cover-based third-person shooting instead of the point-and-click combat typical of the genre, which is the part that’s made it click with players who normally bounce off traditional MOBAs like Dota 2 or League of Legends.

A Year of Steady Updates

Valve has kept up a near-constant cadence of balance patches and content drops throughout 2026 — new heroes and a ranked competitive mode arrived in April, followed by rolling adjustments to stamina, soul orb economy, and item balance through the summer. None of it has come with fanfare; it mostly shows up as a quiet Steam news post, and the community treats each patch like a mini-event anyway.

Should You Try to Get In?

Getting access still requires an invite from an existing player or working around Steam’s family sharing system, and Valve hasn’t said when or if that will change. If you can get in, expect a genuinely unfinished game with rough edges — but also one of the more interesting genre mashups to come out of Valve in years, and a rare case of a game earning a following purely on the strength of its systems.
